Live-in

Mrs B wants to stay independent at home!

THE LIVE-IN CARE SOLUTION

A Way to Stay specializes in providing live-in care assistants who help our clients maintain their independence by living with them. The cost of live-in care compares favorably to that of living in a facility. Read below to find out more about this type of care.

WHY PEOPLE NEED LIVE-IN CARE

It’s usually because of a recent fall, hospitalization, medical or emotional crisis. Typically a senior is now a “fall risk” and is increasingly reliant on others for hands-on assistance. More care is needed to maintain the older adult’s quality of life, usually related to the following conditions:

  • Fall Risk
  • Impaired Mental Status: diminished memory, poor orientation, mild confusion, dementia
  • Medication Non-Compliance
  • Multiple Chronic Conditions
  • Inadequate Support System in Place
  • Questionable Nutrition

WHAT IS LIVE-IN CARE?

Live-in care, sometimes called 24-hour care, provides seniors with one-on-one support from an aide living with them. This type of care allows many older adults to “age in place” rather than relocating to receive a higher level of care; the physical and emotional safety advantage of having an aide 24-hours/day is priceless.

Live-in caregivers are paid a flat daily rate, not an hourly rate. The live-in actually works an eight-hour day spread across the waking hours of the client. The client provides food for the aide and a place for them to sleep. Although the job is called “live-in” the aide doesn’t live with the client; the aide stays with the client for an extended period of time and goes home between shifts. A secondary aide fills in while the primary has time off.

CAREGIVERS SCOPE OF SERVICES

Most clients need hands-on assistance. The aide follows a plan of care developed by our nurse. Normally the client requires a combination of homemaking, companionship and personal care services:

Bathing
Medication reminders
Nutrition
Personal hygiene
Toileting assistance
Continence care
Dressing and grooming
Skin care
Ambulatory assistance
Light housekeeping
Mental Stimulation
Exercise Assistance

THE BENEFITS OF LIVE-IN CARE

24/7 PRESENCE: RELIEF FOR THE FAMILY CAREGIVER Taking care of your parent has become a full-time job. Everything takes longer – bathing, dressing, eating, walking and doctors’ appointments. A live-in aide adjusts to the slower pace of your parent’s life. Because they are in a client’s home 24-hours a day they are always available to handle an emergency. The aide is a 24-hour support for your parent so you aren’t the only one on call.

STOP THE REVOLVING DOOR OF CAREGIVERS: CONTINUITY OF CARE

  • Familiarity with clients wants and needs. The primary Live-In stays with the client for an extended period becoming knowledgeable about his or her routines, preferences and behaviors. The primary shares this information with the backup aide who provides care while the primary is away. They are the first to see subtle changes and alert the family and agency.
  • More cost effective. One aide for 24-hours for a flat fee rather than hourly with multiple aides to cover 24-hours.
